The cardiology service is for people with risk factors or conditions of the heart and its surrounding blood vessels. The cardiology service for the Bay of Plenty is based at Tauranga Hospital with outpatient clinics at Whakatāne Hospital.

Services we provide
We diagnose and treat diseases of the heart and circulatory system at Tauranga Hospital. This includes the:
- arteries of the heart (angina, heart attack)
- electrical system (abnormal heart rhythm, pacemaker)
- heart muscle (heart failure) and valves.
We provide diagnostic tests that include:
- electrocardiography (ECG)
- echocardiography
- exercise treadmill testing
- Holter monitoring
- diagnostic angiography
- transoesophageal echocardiograms
- implants and follow-ups for pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (shock boxes) for abnormal heart rhythm
- angioplasty or stenting procedure.
We do not do open heart surgery at Tauranga Hospital — this is normally performed at Waikato Hospital.
